  1. After seeing the videos and reading the government webpage to help understand the Peace Process, these are the conclusions I have come to about the peace process in our country:

    PROS:

-If there´s no more FARC they won’t have the need to deal with drugs as an economical way to sustain the war.
-There doesn´t seem to be another way out to stop the ongoing war between the Government and FARC
-The peace process gives colombian people some kind of “hope” based on the probability of some “peace”, some “break” I would say, from all the violence we have been facing since so long ago.

    CONS:

-The peace process is not a negociation, is giving FARC everything they ask for

-FARC`s members wont go to jail for what they've done, not even the main leaders, on the contrary, they would have a word on political issues in the country, is that fair? For me it seems like they are going to be rewarded for what they´ve done.

-The government includes all the narcotraffic and kidnaping made by FARC only as political crimes.

-The government is not going to take away FARC´s weapons with the agreement that they don´t use them, but can we trust their word?

-The government is not demanding the return of money from terrorism for the restoration of the victims.

  2. here some pros and cons about the "peace" process in Colombia, after wacthing the videos i am really convinced that our government are giving the freedom to the guerrilla to legalize the criminal acts. what about the victims?

    PROS:

*The peace process has as a goal putting the brakes on armed conflict.

*If there is not more armed conflict, there will not more new victims.

    CONS
*The government has made that criminals don't be sent to prison for their atrocity instead of that, the government give them social freedom under the condition of compensate for doing criminal acts.

*The government has open the door to the guerrilla for participating in politics.

    * the government has not required to the guerrilla the money for offsetting the
    victims.

*The government has not required to the guerrilla to lay down arms letting use them whenever. they want.

*The government would deliver our country to the guerrilla for doing everything the want.

The peace process it is not a guarantee that the guerrilla stops their crimes

  3. After watching the videos(Virginia Beach,Jennifer McCoy,Kimberly Theidon,Charles Parkirson and Alvaro Uribe) , reading the government webpage and consulting others webpages; I became a personal idea about this process and I found the pros and cons of them.

we need recognizing that peace is a supreme good in every democracy, and the objective is putting an end to the armed conflict

The most vocal critic is former president Alvaro Uribe, who argues the rebels are "getting away with murder", referring to the amnesty offer for rebels willing to confess their crimes.

    Pros:
Transformative programs to overcome poverty, social exclusion, corruption and environmental degradation, while seeking equity.

Integral plans with a territorial focus, which constitute economic and productive options that benefit communities.

The recognition of victims and their rights.

A bilateral ceasefire. This would be a genuine, full cessation of all hostilities—all forms of violence.

Land reform: economic and social development of rural areas and provision of land to poor farmers.

Illegal drugs trade (one of the main sources of funding for the Farc): all illicit drug production will be eliminated.

    Cons:

Colombia’s security forces would be absent from some specific zones of FARC.

The government would suspend outstanding arrest warrants for all guerrillas assembled there.

Political participation of rebels once a peace deal is reached.

Transitional justice: amnesty for combatants, excluding those who have committed the most serious crimes.Only those who refuse to own up to crimes committed will be sent to ordinary prisons while the others will undergo "alternative forms" of punishment.

The guerrilla leaders are unlikely to go to jail.

Re-integrating thousands of rebels will also be costly. The re-integration process takes years, with former combatants offered psychological help and vocational training.

The Peace Process in Colombia (Summary)

Colombian Peace Process is a negotiation which is been carried out between the State and the high command of the guerrilla “FARC”, for not shorter than three years, and which aims to bring a solution to the armed conflict of the country.

Regarding this subject, and taking as a starting point the different positions and points of view about the proposals both parties have made, it is possible to define some pro’s and con’s.

As pro’s we have the following aspects:

-The signature of this Peace treaty would mean the end to a civil War which has lasted over half a century and which has only brought, death, tragedy, poverty and social problems to the country.

-The country could concentrate its politics and monetary resources for the economy of the country itself, actions could be taken in favor of the working class and the farmers.

-Problems like narco-traffic, violation of human rights and also the existing terror in Colombian society would decrease.

In the other hand, as con’s we can find the following:

-War criminals and terrorist commanders would be indulged from the crimes they have committed or they are responsible for and they also wouldn’t have to give up on the money they have gained illegally.

-Terrorists could actively participate in the political decisions of the Nation.

-Impunity could lead to a new period of violence, or to the rise of new paramilitary groups.

In conclusion, this is a very long process in which the most important thing is not to sign a Peace Treaty very quickly, but to get to a solid, fair and applicable solution no matter how long it takes.

  5. These are some pros and cons about the peace process I found after watching the videos. I have to say I summarized it everything in short statements.
    Pros:
    1) The process environment has been good. Both parts are optimist and want to contribute to the peace process in Colombia.
    2) The peace process is the opened door Colombia has to finish the war with the FARC. Even thought, there were other peace processes before, this, it has been able to go further.
    3) No more victims in Colombia.
    Cons:
    1) The government equalizes the persecutors with the victims.
    2) Justice, truth and reparation are not warranted.
    3) The process peace mustn’t be the way to improve Santo’s good-citizen image. Government should think in people who are still kidnapped.

  6. After watching the videos and reading the articles I could say that the Peace Process in Colombia has two arguments about it: pros and cons.

    Pros:

    - This process implies no more kidnappings, deaths, extortion and violence, which means: no more victims.

    - Solution of the phenomenon of production and commercialization of drugs.

    - Victims and Land Restitution Law offer a opportunity to restore millions of acres of land to Colombians who have been driven from their homes by violence.

    - It’s another way to combat “the crime”, I mean, not using violence to destroy “violence”.

-The government will stop spending money on arms, so the resources can spend on education, health and alimentation.

    *FARC*

    - Political participation

    - Reincorporation of the FARC-EP to the civil life - in the economic, social and political thing-, in agreement with his interests.

    - They will have the voice they want to have.

    Cons:

    - The Colombians will not feel comfortable with persons who have killed and who did not get any punishment for it.

    * Based in what Álvaro Uribe say *

    - FARC won’t get any punishment for what they have done and they won’t go to jail.

    - FARC and the army will be treated as the same way by the crimes that they have committed, but it would be unjust with the army because they were serving to the country.

    - “Criminals” will participate in politics.

    - FARC won’t leave guns and they will use them whenever they want to.

  7. Certainly the peace process is one of the most important processes is taking place in the country.Although it has been a process that has taken time, this deserves deserves faith and hope, support and collaboration, rather than just negative comments.

    PROS.
-Try to find a solution to the great problem of production and try to finish the commercialization of psychoactive substance.

-ending a violent war that has lasted 50 years.

-The idea of the peace process is that the government can invest more time and money on really important things such as education, development, environment, natural resources and tranquility of people living in dangerous areas.

-There could be more productivity in many Colombian lands which benefit the Colombian economy.

    CONS:

-It is a process that despite the time that has passed, even take time it needs.

-Although is taking a peace process, still, violent acts are committed, abuses and human rights of people are disrespected by the guerrillas.

-The peace process is taking place without a ceasefire, therefore, attacks and part raise questions, the desire for peace of the FARC is in doubt.

-proposals by the FARC are not entirely good for peace in Colombia.

  8. We all may know by watching these videos that the peace process is one of the most controversial subjects that has been around for almost 50 years. Now, all the citizens in Colombia have different thoughts and point of views that might affect positively or negatively our future as a ‘’united nation’’. Therefore, after analyzing these posts, I bring some pros and cons which I was thinking of; here they are:
    Pros:
-By making it official, the War we’ve been fighting against each other, ‘’government – FARC’’, will end which has only given us death, hatred, desolation and pain to the victims.
-Forgiveness as a methodical way of finding peace will demonstrate to everybody else that our country has finally decided that living a peaceful life it’s possible by the determination and tolerance of the citizens. It will be a way to show to the world that our nation is capable of doing things right, It means that it will increase up Colombia’s popularity.
-If this peace process is perfectly carried out, I will mean the end of many drugs and guns sellers companies distributed around our country.

    Cons:
-The movement inquisitor responsible of all of these crimes, known as ‘’FARC’’, won’t be judge at the tribunal nor paid for all of their violent acts against the integrity of the people.
-FARC won’t pay back all the money they got by kidnapping victims.
-The government will allow them to participate in politics issues.
-No one has already established or guaranteed to the citizens, that this group or any other criminal group won’t attack again after this process is finally completed.

  9. Peace Process in Colombia

After I saw and listened some videos about peace process in Colombia I found many information and I can have a main idea about it.
    Pros
-The government and Farc try to end the armed conflict.

-The Farc and the majority the Colombian public opinion going to participate about the decision of peace process.

-The conflict should end, if the government and Farc will agree to make solution about on land reform, illegal drugs, illicit crops and political participation.

-The Farc will go to leave arms and they are going to reinstate to civil, social, and political life.

    Cons

-The Farc shouldn´t go to jail for victims who didn’t have fault of this conflict.
-If the Peace process will continue the Farc should do social work to go back to society.

-the Farc should have transitional justice, amnesty for combatants, excluding those who have committed the most serious crimes.

  10. Hello, after reading a bit more about the peace process in our country I came up to the following conclusions:

    Pros:

-After more than 50 years of conflict, we would have the opportunity to change our vision about how Colombia "is suppose to be" with this, I refer to the way we -Colombian people - are used to this conflict so we just take it and think that it'll never change, we are used to be afraid, we are used to be angry and we are used to feel pain and we reflect that in our society and the way we act in our daily bases.

-I think that at least 50% of Colombians have ever been afected by the drug traffinking directly or indirectly. So, this agreement could decrease the violence and given that we would have a better life.

-Another important thing is that a considerable part of the people that have been displaced from the rural areas could come back to their homes or at least they could be relocated in a good place.

-With this agreement we would have the opportunity of decrease the numbers of kidnapping in Colombia, according to a research made in 2013 FARC is responsible of the 33% of kidnapping in Colombia - and that was almost 3 years ago.

-Most of people is worried about the place that several commands would have in the government after signed the agreement, but WE are the ones that have the power to vote for our leaders so, are we going to choose them? Is not only the government and FARC the ones that are involved, we are involved too and we have a huge responsibility.

    CONS:

-Most of us are worried about the absolution that FARC members are asking for, are they really going to face a trail? are they going to jail? How are the victims going to be repaired?

-Another problem is the place and opportunities that guerrilla members will have in the society even though they have commited terrible crimes. In this moment we have an elevated number of people without work, so, if the government doesn't take care of this problem all those criminals would have better oportunities than good people.

  11. First, I want to add that any process which its final result is peace, shall be good.

The main aspects treated in the peace process are :
    *Comprehensive agricultural development
    *Political participation by farc
    *End of the conflict
*Solution to the illicit drugs problem
    *Victims: Implementation, verification and countersignature

Anyways, gathering all the information presented in this post (videos, reading) I've deduced some pros and cons in the Peace process:

For the positive aspects, In the information presented here I've found that the people would feel, in some cases, safer than before; there would be less to worry, about war and violence.
On the other hand, the problems which involves terrain and rebel groups could be solve; also the problems with illicit drugs, could be controled more easy with farc collaboration.
Not in the video but implicite, it's the question about the money that would be safe without having to fight that guerrilla conflict: money, that could be spent in many other important aspects in the country.
It is also an important aspect to give retribution to victims relatives.
Finally, to add an important fact, Farc would stop kidnappings.

Now, talking about cons, there are the following aspects:
In the process could be involved economic interests, which could deflect or hinder the process of peace.
In other hand, many people disagree the point of "no jail for the Farc members". They won't pay prison just giving their confessions.
Other issue is that the process needs time to be developed, so It could take to much time to bring results, and the results needs to last.
Other problem is the trust in the farc speech: many people don't trust the Farc to keep the word of what they said.
Another possible problem is that many people wants the farc be treated more harshly, about its punishments, and for sure, Farc won't take this gently.
And finally ( and this is Alvaro's Uribes opinion) there is a possibility for this process to take colombia into a subsequent dictatorship, supported by the ministry, due to the "the gentle treatment" and the possibility to the Farc for interact in a political way and the alleged connection between the Farc group and the "dictatorial system" in venezuela.

  12. Having FARC out of the countryside would obviously allow multinationals to get there openly and establish their companies because I think it's evident the gorvenment wants to sell every little profitable space on this country. I mean, many of those spaces I talk about have been already sold, but the presence of guerillas has helped some of our contrymen and indigenous to defend their territories from the hands of foreigners whose only aim is to exploit everything (a even to defend those territories from the careless intervention of the government). But, since we are a heterogeneous country, this probable intervention of multinationals -on those spaces left by guerrillas- would favor some of our people too: they would give more employement, something that would be positive for our country's economy. I think this is one side of the situation (if FARC actually leaves the countryside).
On the other hand, I don't think FARC will disintegrate at such, I mean, maybe they will reduce their militants, but they will most probably keep there fighting and standing for their ideals through clandestine groups, something that would create another kind of violence when trying to identify them (I say this is likely to happen because I don't think FARC members would have it easy to reintegrate to common order in society -and I don't think society would accept their reintegration that easily either...so I guess they would be driven to keep doing what they've been into for many years, but through different ways).
Those are for me two of the major aspects of this issue and their connotations.

  13. Watching the videos suggested and doing a little research on the web, these are the ideas I can to draw from the peace process:

The peace process in Colombia is presented as a chance to end armed conflict that more than 50 years has claimed millions of lives in our territory.

There will be recognition and clarification of the most serious incidents occurred during 50 years of war.

The creation of a special unit high-level humanitarian, the aim is to direct, coordinate humanitarian actions of search and identification of all missing persons

FARC help in the search, location, recovery and identification of remains of dead or missing during the conflict

The guerrillas will participate in demining and the substitution of illicit crops and reforestation of war-damaged territories.

It must promote coexistence in the territories, on the understanding that coexistence is not to simply share the same social and political space, but in the creation of a transformer enabling environment for peaceful resolution of conflicts and the construction of the wider culture of respect and tolerance in a democracy.

On the other hand, the main opponents of the peace process who are the prosecutor Alejandro Ordoñez and the former president of the republic Alvaro Uribe (in his presidential period the armed conflict in the country actually intensified, as also by 52% the number of guerrillas killed in combat per 100,000 population increased. Period with the highest number of victims of displacement and extrajudicial killings). these are some arguments they presented against the peace process:

The sentences concentrated only on the heads of armed groups (selected cases) leave outside research serious human rights violations, as in illegal organizations not only commit heinous crimes the bosses.

If the truth is not guaranteed, justice and reparation, the peace process would not pass the assessment of international tribunals and the door open for intervention.

  14. Hello everyone, after getting to know a little bit more about the Peace Progress in Colombia, here are [to me] the pros and cons:

    Pros:

*Colombians would start to feel more safe in our country, instead of being constantly afraid of what could happen to us at any time.

*Terrorists acts and narco-trafficking would decrease in our country.

*The image that's been portrait of Colombia would change and it would lead to an increase in the economy.

*The voice that has been given to the people to be able to judge and express their opinions about what is being done by the government and the other members.

    Cons:

    * No jail for the members of the FARC. Treating them fairly, put them in the equal place as the victims? No. A lot of families and innocent people have been living in terrible conditions because of guerrilla's atrocious acts, and they are asking for a humane response?

*Letting them keep their weapons, because the won't use them. How can we be sure about that?

*Active political participation for the integrants.

So, I personally think, any human deserve a second chance, and just how it was mention in one of the videos, many of those people that are part of the FARC, are not exactly there because they made the decision, but in a very general aspect, that people have being the initiators for a big part of the bad reputation that the country has in the world. Here in the country, is not what I would call normal, but a lot of people just don't pay attention to it anymore, because it's something that has won a very strong position, and not everyone is convinced that this peace process is going to make the situation better, at least not completely.

  16. Hello everyone!
After watching the videos, reading the government webpage and consulting other resources after this assignment to be in context with what it happens in our country; here are some pros and cons about the peace process in Colombia, from my point of view.

I think that a principal factor in the process peace is ‘to listen to the voice of the Colombian people'.

    Pros:
-If there is no more FARC somehow Colombia could progress a bit more.
-The peasants will be able to return to cultivate your grounds and to have more possibilities of investment.
-The peace process might offer to us good opportunities if Santos president was thinking about common good.

    Cons:
-If the government doesn’t consider the opinions of the Colombian people, this process doesn’t make any sense.

-Fear of people will increase knowing the guerrilla will be free without paying their crimes and all that they have done and moreover this group will be able to take part in political parties, but this time formally, because is obvious that they somehow handle our country.

-This process has created many conflicts between the Colombian political parties, in this case Santos vs. Uribe who at this moment is in opposition to the peace process, which apparently is handling for the FARC and not for the president Santos.

-A very important factor to considering at this moment is the role of the mass media because they persuade the people and more when the persons live in a countryside where they only can see a national channel and the news is persuaded by high-powered people, it is worrying because create more conflicts between the persons who doesn’t have knowledge of what is really happening.

-The peace process will not guarantee repair to the victims of the FARC as a kidnapped civilians, extortions, recruited minors, vehicles of incinerated civilians, massacres against the civilian people.

  19. Here are the pros and cons after reading and watching the information above.

    Pros:

-The end of a 50 year conflict that has only left a culture of violence, thousands of deaths and more than 7 million displaced people in the country.

-The end of an illegal armed group that nowadays has no social support and has became as corrupt as those against whom it was revealed.

-The opportunity to compensate the Colombian armed conflict victims by remembering the true conflict and violence origins (and actors) in Colombia. This will mean the end of the conflict and its future repetition.

-A successful peace process will help to close the gap between the countryside and the city. This means more investment and technological development to the countryside. This dignifies displaced people and farmers by giving them more opportunities to progress.

-People’s participation: That means Colombians can participate into the agreements made in La Habana via referendum.

-The opportunity to develop a truly democratic and inclusive nation.

    Cons:

-Lack of trust between negotiating parties, which could leads into a post conflict failure, like the genocide of The Patriotic Union (aka The Red Dance ‘El Baile Rojo’).

-The long-term results. Which means Peace is not only the lack of physical violence. We all have grown in a culture of violence and we have learnt to live with it, to accept it. Nowadays violence seems to be a part of our lives, it’s in our language, it’s in the way we treat the others, even our family... and we don’t even notice. This ‘long-term results’ implies everybody’s effort, not only governments.

-Guerrilla’s leaders’ impunity. Which means no jail or punishment for them.

-The fear of letting FARC become stronger while Peace process. This is, because of the bilateral cease-fire.

    -Terrorist’s political participation.

  21. Well, here are my perceptions about the pros and cons of the peace process in Colombia after seeing the videos:

    Pros:

    - The problem of the kidnapping is very serious. So, with this alliance there will be less kidnapping by this terrorist group.

    - The government set up some really important laws: the victims law and the land restitution law. With this agreement it will be really fulfilled.

    - Also, this agreement will ensure a future model of conflict resolution with greater public participation.

    - Additionally, after over 50 years of violation of human rights we could obtain a decrease not only in this problem but also with the narco-traffic side.

    Cons:

    - They will forget the damage caused by the ringleaders of FARC, who use the w.ar, kidnapping and killing of people to fulfill their satisfactions and desires. There is a major obstacle to sign the peace.

    - The perpetrators will have the possibility to participate in politics.

    - There is no guarantee that the FARC will let their crimes after signing the agreement.

  22. Well, I'm not expert in these topics but in this time I will give you the positive and negative aspects for me of peace process. Remember, the peace process is a conflict resolutions between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and State. This process took about three years for show results.

    Pro:
*This process want to finish the narco-traffic in the country.

*This process wants to end up with the armed conflict that frightened to the country approximately for 50 years.

    Cons:

    * Speaking about impunity, My question is: where they remain the victims of the armed conflict? Will they pay the damages caused to the society?.
The peace process proposed jail time only for these people who committed several cases.

    * These people are able to create a political ideals and send a candidate for representative them to the senate, congress, ect.

    * When the government talk about lay down arms? Farc can use their arms when they want for personal defense.

There are a few aspect of peace process.

  23. Hi guys. After watching the videos posted right above I've had a chance to get my head around the peace process' pros and cons. So here are my punctual conclusions:

    PROS

    - It's no secret that Colombia has been a victim of the armed conflict for a long period of time. So, the primary objective of this process is to draw a line under it and finally get over with these more than fifty years of war conflict. And who wouldn't want to get this over with?

-To put an end to the FARC = to reduce drug trafficking and violence in general = enhace the foreing perspective of Colombia = economic growth

-Horizons broadened, that means, recover the lands inhabited by the FARC.

-Victims displaced from their home could be relocated, if there's a prove of ownership.

    ReplyDelete
  24. CONS:

-I agree with Fernando Vallejo when, in a interview, he said -In La Habana is negociated the spoils of the public officials and its contracts-.
That goes for the active political participation of the Farc's members wich is the first step to get what at the begging they wanted to reach.

-Impunity for the perpetrators and lack of justice for the victims.

For example, the top leader of the FARC, alias 'Timochenko' has 162 arrest warrants and several other sentences amounting 178 years' imprisonment. But, with this 'fair' process he would be exonerate of his sentence.

    - what can we expect later? With this negative example of justice, the conception of crime is modificaTed and gives you an open way to steal, rape, kill....

    ReplyDelete
  25. Pro's

    - Colombian civil war will end and there will be more tranquility and peace in the country.

    - The restitution of the lands that were taken away by FARC.

    - The goverment will not invest that much in weaopn because there will not be a civil war to support.

    - Productivity of cocain will dicrease and there will not be to much violence.

    Con's:

    - People wouldn't feel knowing that therar criminals (most of them really bad) walking by their side.

    - FARC will participate in political decisions.

    - The criminals won't be sentenced and the will be able to use their arms whenever they want to.

    - FARC won't have to give back the money they earned illegaly.

I guess that with this process, Colombian goverment will accept most of FARC conditions, in order to get peace.
